The boy was odd.

As Anea had said, carefully he hooded the brilliance of his light that he might not blind them; and turning full around at last, entered once more, and for a little while again, into the habitation of Man.

I'd seen these on the shelves since I started buying books.  Took about 30 plus years to finally read it.

A magazine version was published in 1959 in the magazine Astounding Science Fiction and a shorter version of the novel was published in 1960 under the title The Generic General.

DORSAI!

Donal Graham, Dorsai of the Dorsai, was the final link in a long genetic train, the ultimate soldier, whose bredth of vision made him a master of space war and stategy - and something even greater.  He was the focus of centuries of evolution, the culmination of planned development, and through him a new force made itself felt.

The Dorsai were renowned throughout the galaxy as the finest soldiers ever born, trained from birth to fight and win, no matter what the odds.  With Donal at their head they embarked upon the final, impossible venture: they set out to unify the splintered world of Mankind.

DORSAI! is the magnificent conclusion of Gordon R. Dickson's epic vision of the future, a vision as sweeping and brilliant as Asimov's
Foundation trilogy.

Sixth printing based on the number line

DAW book number unknown.  Paul Lehr is credited for the cover art on the copyright page but the cover art is signed by Theakston.  The artist Greg Theakston is assumed.

Since the catalog ID is the same as the 5th printing even though the cover was changed, I have made the DAW number for this publication the same as the original cover's number.

DORSAI!
Not all the other worlds of men combined would date to try conclusions with that one world of soldiers born and bred.
DORSAI!
More than wealth, more than fame, more than beauty, that name sets them apart from ordinary humanity.
DORSAI!
But though it is the heritage of them all, still it belongs more to one certain individual than all the rest.  His name is Donal Graeme.  He is the ultimate, perfect man of war.  This is his story.

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.

See my goodreads icon goodreads page. I almost never do reviews, but I use this site to catalogue books.
See my librarything icon librarything page. I use this site to catalogue books and it has more details on books than goodreads does.
